GILROY – Come summer, Gilroy High School will be closed as crews complete modernization projects. The campus should be ready to reopen in time for school on Aug. 30. There will be a community information meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight,, in the GHS library. Many exciting projects will begin and/or be completed this summer, including:
• Resurfacing, striping and widening of the entrance/exit of the student parking lot.
• Complete modernization of the gym, theater and “C” building which includes most of the science labs.
• All new clocks, bells and loudspeakers for every classroom on campus.
• Two new computer labs
• Foundation work for the expansion of the library and bookroom (completion date summer 2005)
• Foundation work for the new cafeteria, student services offices, (completion date fall 2005)
Where will the library, student services, book room, and Associated Student Body offices be located during construction? What will happen to programs that have depended on the campus for the summer? These and other questions will be answered and addressed at the community meeting.
Patrols increase on Hwy. 25
HOLLISTER/GILROY – Officers from the Hollister-Gilroy Area California Highway Patrol will be providing enhanced enforcement on state routes in San Benito County in conjunction with the California Collision Reduction project.
Enforcement will be increased on Highway 25 until the end of 2004 for the purpose of reducing injury and fatal collisions as a result of unrestrained or improperly restrained occupants.
Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic safety, through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
Tee it up, help St. mary’s and St. Joseph’s
GILROY – Golfers eager for a spring scramble that supports a good local cause can sign up now for the annual St. Mary Golf Day slated for Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Friday, April 23.
Tee off is at 11 a.m. for the four-person team tournament that benefits St. Mary Parish and the St. Joseph’s Family Center. Included in the $200 entry fee: Golf, cart, shirt, lunch, cigars, tee prizes and a wonderful dinner in the clubhouse.

Cocktails begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. The auction will feature sports memorabilia from former 49er greats like Jerry Rice and items signed by members of the San Jose Sharks.
Free concert
GILROY – The South Valley Youth Orchestra (SVYO), directed by conductor Joey Fortino, will perform a free concert tonight in the Gilroy High School Theater at 7 p.m. The orchestra features youth from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and surrounding communities.
The SVYO is a non-profit organization.

School birthday party
GILROY – Glen View School will celebrate its 50th birthday on Wednesday, April 7. The community and past alumni are invited to join in the festivies.
Registation starts at 5:15 p.m. and ceremonies start at 5:45 p.m. Cake and refreshments will be served. Classrooms will be open from 7 to 8 p.m.

GILROY – Gilroy High School Chamber Singers will hold “Auf Wiedersehen Concert” on Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. at South Valley National Bank.
A $5 donation at the door goes toward their trip to Germany and the Czech Republic.
Dine for a cure
GILROY – Eat at Chevys, 8440 Murray Ave., on Wednesday, April 7, and support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Cycling Team in Training. Gilroy museum hours
GILROY – The normal operating hours of the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St., are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The museum, located in the historic 1920 Carnegie Library Building, is also open the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. Details: 848-0470.
