Ranger-led fun at Coyote

GILROY – Coyote Lake park rangers are offering two programs this weekend.

Join Ranger Crockett on a blast to the past. Sing a camp song, play good-ole’ outdoor games and listen to a spooky story while eating traditional campfire fare at the Coyote Lake Visitor Center on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 8 to 9 p.m.

Visit Coyote Lake on Sunday, Aug. 31, to discover how reptiles and amphibians play very important roles in the web of life. Participate in games and activities with a park ranger. Meet some live slitherers up close and personal. Meet at the Coyote Lake Visitor Center at 10 a.m. for the two-hour program.

AAUW fall luncheon

GILROY – Prospective, current and at-large members of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) are invited to the fall membership luncheon at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in San Juan Bautista on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11:45 a.m. Guest speaker Rebecca Hall will present “Not Killing Me Softly: African American Women in Slave Revolts.” Hall is an AAUW Educational Foundation fellow and a Ph.D. candidate in history at University of California at Santa Cruz. She has worked extensively with homeless people, survivors of domestic violence and asylum seekers. She taught law students how to represent low-income people in housing law, as well as tenant’s rights workshops throughout the Bay Area. Her career change from law to history was motivated by her realization that the answers she sought were to be found, not in litigation, but in structured patterns of race, class and gender.

Scouts welcome barbecue

GILROY – All boys from first-grade through fourth-grade and their families are invited to join the Boy Scouts of America in the Cub Scouting program. Their annual barbecue will be Saturday, Sept. 6, at Mt. Madonna County Park at the West Deer Pen Youth Site beginning at 4 p.m. Join in overnight camping if you would like. Saddle up with Range Riders

GILROY – The Gilroy Range Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooters are holding practice on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Horse Discovery Center located at 2440 Dryden Road, Gilroy. Practice will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Monthly practices are normally held on the first Saturday of each month. Take a hike

MORGAN HILL – Take a scenic hike at Uvas Canyon County Park on Saturday,

Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join a park ranger on a one-mile moderate hike to waterfalls and other natural wonders of the park. Meet at the day-use parking lot.
