GILROY – The Gavilan College Choir will be performing their ‘Spring Concerts on Sunday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 25.
The Sunday concert will be held at St. Stephen’s Church, 651 Broadway. Tuesday’s concert will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, located at 16870 Murphy Ave. in Morgan Hill. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
The Gavilan College Choir is a college and community chorus that involves musicians from throughout South County, under the direction of Phillip Robb. The Spring Concert will include a broad selection of music from Baroque to contemporary composers. Performing with the choir on a few of the selections will be the South Valley String Quartet. They will also be performing a few selections by themselves.
Be an alley artist
GILROY – The Fairview Drive Neighborhood presents ‘Alleyway Paint Out Day’ on Saturday, June 5, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Southside Alley Way, 400 Fairview Drive.
Help paint the alleyway fence and make a positive difference in the community. After the paint out, all participants are invited to lunch and treats.
The event is sponsored by the Gilroy Police Department and South County Housing.

$50,000 in prizes
GILROY – Celestial Arts is offering more than $50,000 in cash and prizes in a free poetry contest.
‘Even if you have never entered a competition before,’ says Poetry Editor Michael Thomas, ‘this is your opportunity to win big. Even if you have written only one poem it deserves to be read and appreciated. Beginners are especially welcome.’

Play with Jeff Garcia
GILROY – The public is invited to join Jeff Garcia and friends in the 2004 ‘Jeff Garcia Open Annual Golf Tournament’ benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Joseph’s Family Center and local youth scholarships.
The tournament will be held on Friday, June 11, at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
Don’t miss this chance for a day of fun with Garcia and other celebrities in support of local charities. The scramble play, mixed-team tournament will feature prizes, including the chance to win a new car or $1 million dollars for a hole in one. Check in will be at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Hors d’oeuvres, dinner, silent and live auctions and awards presented by Garcia will cap off an exciting day.

Award local helpers
GILROY – Nominations are now being accepted for the Gavilan College 2004 Community Spirit Awards. The awards recognize contributions to the communities that form the Gavilan Joint Community College District. Each year, three sets of awards are presented, for the communities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Benito County. This year, for the first time, nominations are being solicited from the community at large.
Any individual, organization or business in the Gavilan College District (exclusive of Gavilan College employees) may be nominated. A selection panel at Gavilan College will review the nominations, and present the awards at community events in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. Anyone who lives or works in the district may submit a nomination.
The first set of awards for 2004 will be presented for the community of Morgan Hill at the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on Sept. 2. Nomination forms with selection criteria are available online. Completed nominations for the Morgan Hill award should be returned by Friday, June 11.
(Deadlines for the Gilroy and Hollister awards will be announced at a later date.)

Big bubble contest
GILROY – Wal-Mart will host the fifth annual ‘Dubble Bubble National Bubble Blowing Contest’ on June 12, beginning at 11 a.m.
Kids ages 12 and under will compete to see who can blow the biggest bubble gum bubble. All bubbles will be measured using an official Dubble Bubble Bubble Meter. Six finalists from across the country will be eligible to compete for a $10,000 savings bond and $5,000 donation to Children’s Miracle Network in the national finals in August.
June festival
GILROY – The Kemetic Institute, Cultural Center and Museum, 7469 Forest St., presents the second ‘Juneteenth Celebration’ on June 17 and 18.
On June 17 join in for good food and music from 6 to 10 p.m.
On June 18, join in for the Chili Cookout Competition and judge the best chili in Gilroy from 1 to 8 p.m. Non-food vendor space is available.
