Man killed in alleged DUI accident identified

• Gilroy – A San Jose man who died Tuesday after being struck by a suspected drunken driver Saturday night was identified as Jaime Sandoval, 24, according to a Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office spokeswoman.

Sandoval was driving east on Leavesley Road about 10:30pm when he was struck head-on by a van driven by Ruben Agular, 34, also of San Jose, police said.

Sandoval suffered major injuries, including head trauma, and was flown to Stanford University Medical Center where he was taken off life support Tuesday.

Following the crash, police say Agular attempted to continue driving into Gilroy but had lost a tire and could not control his van. He allegedly forced another driver off the road, who suffered no injuries.

Agular continued on foot to nearby In-N-Out, where he was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run, but those charges could be amended to include a manslaughter charge, said Sgt. Kurt Svardal.

The case was turned over to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office for review.

Grant will help pay for recycled water project

• Gilroy – The Santa Clara Valley Water District has received a $2.23 million state grant to fund a recycled water project for South County. The district is building the $28 million project in conjunction with the South County Wastewater Regional Authority to double the use of reclaimed water over the next two years.

“Recycling water is important not just to South County but the whole county,” District Spokesman Mike DiMarco said. “Despite all the rainfall we had this year, all it takes is one year of no or little rain and we could see shortages. Recycled water is a great way to stretch your supply of available drinking water.”

Burglary, auto theft suspect pleads not guilty

• San Martin – A man accused of burglary, auto theft and possession of burglary tools pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Scott Campione, 41, of Turlock, remains in county jail in lieu of $15,000 bail. A preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to hold him for trial is scheduled for June 15 in the San Martin court facility, according to Assistant District Attorney Mark Hood, who is prosecuting the case.

The charges against Campione stem from an incident April 24 when he was shot in the biceps by MHPD Officer Steve Pennington while allegedly fleeing the scene of a burglary at the former Flying Lady Restaurant on Foothill Drive in eastern Morgan Hill.

The shooting was deemed accidental after an investigation by MHPD and the District Attorney’s Office. Pennington, who had been on paid administrative leave during the incident, returned to full regular duty May 13.
