Celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Gilroy – Gavilan College celebrates Mexican Independence Day from 10am to 2 pm, Thursday, Sept. 16, on the school’s campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

The community is invited to spend a few hours enjoying some of the festivities, including food, mariachi music, pinatas, a BBQ lunch and a voter registration drive. The event is free and open to the public, but there is a charge for lunch.

This will be the second year that the celebration will include voter registration efforts.

“Currently the ASB is focusing much of it’s efforts on voting and voter registration,” said Michelle Vucetich, Associated Student Body Vice President for Communications. “Our goal is to have 200 students registered and voting.”

The day is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day, when, in the early hours of Sept. 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo, accompanied by several co-conspirators – Ignacio Allende, and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez – rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty. It marked the beginning of the Independence War, which lasted 10 years.
