San Jose – Former Gilroy High School Principal Wendy Gudalewicz is the new principal of San Jose’s largest high school.
Gudalewicz joined Independence High School, on the city’s East Side, this fall. She was principal of GHS from 1998 until 2002, when she resigned because she was opposed to implementing honors classes.
Gudalewicz had opposed separating students based on their ability levels. Independence High currently has honors classes.
Zapata murder
trial delayed
San Martin – Jury selection in the trial of Paul Zapata, accused of killing a man outside a Gilroy 7-Eleven store in 2001, is now scheduled to start Monday, Oct. 4.
The court is dealing with pre-trial motions this week, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.
Las Madres Fall sale benefits local charities
Gilroy Las Madres will hold its annual Fall Garage Sale Friday, from 8am to noon at 750 La Paloma Way, Gilroy.
The sale will feature a huge selection of gently used children’s clothing, toys and furniture, as well as maternity items.
A portion of sales will be directed to the Las Madres organization, which donates funds to local charities.
Gilroy Las Madres is a nonprofit support, education and friendship organization for parents of young children from birth until kindergarten.
Celebrate the Gang Task Force
Gilroy – In honor of serving Gilroy youth for ten years, the Gilroy Gang Task Force invites the community to the “Gilroy Community Youth Center 10-Year Anniversary Celebration” from 5 to 7pm Friday, at the youth center, located at the corner of Sixth and Railroad streets.

Be entertained watching ‘Belles’
Gilroy – The final shows of the Pintello Comedy Theater’s “Belles” is Friday and Saturday at 8pm each night, at 8531 Church St.
The play is about six women from Memphis who live all over the country and stay in touch by phone.
The exchanges are sometimes hilarious and sometimes poignant, but always entertaining.
Tickets are $15.

Celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Gilroy – On Monday, celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi at St. Mary’s School.
The traditional celebration includes Blessing of the Animals at 2:45pm on school grounds.
Children are encouraged to bring household pets and barnyard animals – properly caged and leashed – to share in the celebration.
In the Catholic church, St. Francis of Assisi is honored as the Patron Saint of Ecology because of the special care he gave to animals and things in nature that should be an example to everyone.
Still time to register to vote in Nov. 2 election
Santa Clara – There is still time to register to vote in the upcoming Nov. 2 Presidential Election.
Voters are encouraged to register by Monday to receive a sample ballot or by Oct. 18 for those who need to re-register, have moved, changed their name or want to change their political party affiliation.
Those who register between Oct. 4 and 18 will receive a letter notifying them of their polling place.
Registration forms may be found at city halls, fire stations, post offices, public libraries; the Registrar of Voters’ office, 1555 Berger Drive, Bldg. 2, in San Jose, or online at www.sccvote.org.
