• Gilroy – Dennis Lalor, the executive director of South County Housing, was recognized June 1 by a national community development group as an outstanding leader in the nonprofit housing sector. Lalor joined 24 other directors of community development organizations in receiving the Pioneers in Excellence award from Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which leverages private and government money for affordable housing projects. Lalor has served as South County’s director since 1997.

Attend the Academy Awards, Gilroy style

• Gilroy – The Gilroy High School choirs will present their final concert of the year Thursday. This year’s theme will be Academy Award winning songs from the past 73 years. The five choirs will take turns performing some of the great favorites that extend back to 1934 when the seventh Academy Awards handed out its first “Best Song.” Since then such familiar songs as “High Hopes,” “Moon River,” “The Shadow Of Your Smile,” “You’ll Be In My Heart” and 66 others have won the title.

Students will be dressed as their favorite character from one of the featured songs. The audience is invited to also dress accordingly and join in the evening’s fun.

The concert will be held at the Gavilan College Theater, beginning at 7:30pm with doors opening at 7:10pm for seating. The box office will open at 6:30pm for tickets which are $5.

Blood drive Thursday at First Baptist Church

• Gilroy – The American Red Cross is conducting a blood drive Thursday, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave. a from 1:30 to 6:30pm.

‘Rock for Rescue’ benefits animal shelter

• Morgan Hill – Chris Ellis, the Shadow Opera, and the Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) present “Rock for Rescue,” a fund-raising event for the San Martin Animal Shelter. The line-up includes Chris’ band The Shadow Opera, Bull Band, and Sevenson, winner of the recent Battle of the Bands at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill. The show runs from 12:30 to 5pm Saturday.
