GILROY – A drunk driver went off Bolsa Road shortly after midnight Wednesday, hitting a tree and leaving her passenger with a broken collarbone, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A CalSTAR helicopter airlifted Shirley Orca, 32, of Hollister, to San Jose Medical Center.
The driver, 21-year-old Katherine Matter, of Gilroy, had facial cuts and complained of pain, and paramedics took her by ambulance to St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy. After being treated there, she was immediately taken to the Santa Clara County Jail in San Jose.
Matter tested over the legal blood-alcohol-content limit of 0.08, and she faces a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. The charge, normally a misdemeanor, was raised to a felony since a person was injured as a result of Matter’s drunk driving.
Matter was southbound on Bolsa Road when she drove off the road on a curve and hit a tree at 12:39 a.m. Wednesday, according to the CHP.
