Q: Why does my cat knead me with his paws?

A: He’s tenderizing you. Just kidding.

Actually, when a cat kneads you with his paws it’s a sign of love, according to Holly Webber, owner of the Sacramento, Calif. cat breeding business HDW Enterprises and Foothill Felines Bengals, and author of the article “Feline Behaviors.”

Your cat isn’t crazy. He’s reverting back to a behavior he would have expressed as a kitten, kneading his mother’s nipples to stimulate the flow of milk, and he’s showing you that he feels an intense sense of comfort and warmth with you. During the kneading process, your cat may purr and even drool, but if his affection leaves you with a twinge of pain, consider trimming his nails more regularly or keeping an extra towel nearby to cut down on the claw marks, Webber wrote.
