With the school year beginning Tuesday, Aug. 21, the Gilroy Police Department will be devoting extra officers to enforce traffic safety in school zones, based on the Safe Routes to School federal grant the City obtained in 2008.
Officers will be focused on vehicle code violations within school zones, such as double parking, illegal turning maneuvers, speeding, impeding traffic, jaywalking, cellular telephone violations and distracted driving violations.
“Parents are encouraged to develop pick-up and drop-off plans with their children that are safe, abide by school safety rules and do not violate traffic laws,” wrote Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao in a press release.
