GILROY – Sometimes it isn’t the end result that makes an impression on the opponent.

After Christopher High’s junior varsity field hockey game against St. Francis-Mountain View ended with the Cougars on the losing end of a 4-2 contest on a blustery Tuesday afternoon in Gilroy, Lancers’ coach Emily Risberg walked over to the CHS bench and told the team they had made great improvements, saying, “this team is on fire.”

Riding a two-game winning streak (2-0 vs. Carmel on Monday and 1-0 over RL Stevenson) heading into their final game of their inaugural season, the Cougars came out aggressive in the opening half and quickly established a 1-0 advantage just four minutes into the game on a goal by Abagail Smith.

“Coming off of the two wins and this being our last home game, and since we have played St. Francis twice already, they were really gunning for them,” head coach Stacey Myers said.

The Cougars dropped the two previous match ups against the Lancers 5-1 and 2-0, further proving that Tuesday’s result was a testament to how much the Cougars have improved over the course of the year.

“I’ve seen improvements in everyone,” Myers said. “I had two girls who had played before and the rest were new. The ones who had played before and the ones who were most awkward at the beginning have all improved. It’s just great to see and I love it.”

After the Cougars jumped out to the quick lead the Lancers settled down and scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 advantage.

However, the Cougars gathered some momentum and mounted a late push toward the Lancer goal.

Their persistence paid off as Raquel Roberts buried a shot with four seconds to go before halftime knotting the score at 2-2.

Danielle Dias and Maddie Peterson split time at goalie, each making key saves in their respective halves wearing the pads.

“I’m excited for the girls to play varsity next year,” Myers said. “We faced a lot of the tougher teams that won’t be in our league like St. Francis and Mitty and I think that prepared us for next year’s play.”
