In its first official preseason outing, the Gilroy High field hockey team put on an offensive clinic usually seen midway through a season.

Shayna Robledo had four goals, Katelyn Nebesnick added three more as the Mustangs easily handled Westmont High 10-0 on Thursday in San Jose.

“We started out pretty slow, and I was like ‘oh no, what’s going on here?'” head coach Adam Gemar said. “But then we started to click.”

Monica Marrazzo, who was named Player of the Game by her teammates, tallied two first-half goals, and Aubrey Young joined the scoring barrage with a score and three assists.

“(Marrazzo) has been one of our stronger players for us, that I’ve seen, so far,” Gemar said.

The Mustangs attacked the net, piling up 25 to 30 shots on goal, Gemar said, while holding Westmont to zero.

“Our defense wasn’t tested much, but they did some stuff well,” Gemar added.

Over the weekend, the Mustangs participated in a jamboree, going 3-0-1 against some of the teams they will face in the Mount Hamilton Athletic League.

The games were just 30 minutes long (games are usually 60 minutes), however, the Mustangs defeated Saratoga, Saint Francis and Los Altos. They also played to a 0-0 draw with Mitty.
