The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For the news that the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department is going to dedicate a deputy to fighting rural crime in South Valley. The new deputy will be assigned in January. It’s ridiculous that large tractors, for example, are being stolen from area farms. With the sheriff’s department working together with Gilroy and Morgan Hill police, we should be able to nab some of these criminals and protect the farmers from undue loss.

JEERS: For the Gifted and Talented Program within Gilroy Unified School District. It has been allowed to wither on the vine, denying our best and brightest students an appropriate challenge. Let’s start GUSD accountability with a timeline for the presentation and implementation of a completely overhauled GATE program. These students deserve the same commitment of time and resources as those students who need special assistance. It should be one of GUSD’s top priorities as the newly elected board members take their seats.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy High School field hockey team which heads into the playoffs Saturday against perennial power Los Gatos. Married GHS coaching duo, Adam and Erin Gemar, have built an outstanding program for our community and this might be the strongest Mustang team to date. Gilroy is 14-3-2 and a CCS title flag for the wall in the gym is a real possibility. Let’s take down Los Gatos first.

JEERS: For the ridiculous sum given to teachers at Gilroy High for classroom supplies: $50. Fifty bucks. This buck should stop squarely in the lap of the Board of Trustees. Gilroy needs a new policy that gives teachers the tools to create a lively and interesting classroom.

CHEERS: For the Poppy Jasper Film Festival in Morgan Hill this weekend. The fledgling event has numerous films and headline speakers today. Dig out our Thursday lifestyles section for a full event listing or check out www.poppyjasperfilmfest.com for details.
