GILROY – Fire investigators think arson could be the cause of a fire in the house next-door to the new fire station on Sunrise Drive early Sunday morning.

“It’s suspicious at this time, and it’s under investigation,” Gilroy Fire Department Division Chief Charles Hurley said Monday.

The fire started in a bedroom closet at 940 Sunrise Drive. Firefighters contained it to the bedroom, and no one was hurt.

“The closet sustained heavy damage, and there was some significant heat damage and smoke damage to the surrounding bedroom,” said Hurley, who was present at the fire scene.

The GFD received the call at 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Due to city budget constraints, the Sunrise station does not yet have fire trucks or a firefighting staff. The two members of an emergency medical team assigned there investigated the initial smoke sighting and organized coverage, but they could not fight the fire.

The first fire crew arrived four minutes after the initial call from the Las Animas fire station at Wren and Welburn avenues, the GFD reported.
