A fire broke out around 8 p.m. Monday evening in a dry field behind the Gilroy Dispatch office in south Gilroy.
The fire burned part of the fence and small shrub plants along the fence behind the building at 6400 Monterey Road that houses the Gilroy Dispatch, Superior Stone and Consolidated Electrical Distribution.
Crews extinguished the fire quickly before it could spread to the building separated by the parking lot. No structures were damaged, and firefighters sprayed the surrounding area in the field to keep it from spreading.
At the time, firefighters didn’t know what caused the fire. Homeless camps have been set up there in the past along the fence, but they were unsure if that is what caused the fire. The camps had been empty, but people still walk behind the fence in the field.
