Three engines from Gilroy, one engine from CalFire and one battalion chief responded to a grass fire that lit up an eighth of an acre around 1:20 p.m. Thursday off IOOF Avenue, just behind Rebekah Children’s Services and near the railroad tracks.
Captain Paul Butler, who was working out of the Chestnut Fire Station Thursday, said he observed a small homeless encampment in the middle of where the fire was – but noted “we can’t determine it came from there.”
Butler said no one was hurt during the blaze. Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control in a span of 10 to 20 minutes.Â
