DE ANZA – Once again the De Anza Flash played in the afternoon’s heat. At 2 p.m. last Saturday, the Flash took on Palo Alto 88 at their Cubberly High School home.
Palo Alto was shorthanded the whole game due to injuries and other commitments. To offset PA’s lack of players, the Flash decided to pack their own half of the field and counter-attack. The Flash took advantage of this strategy to work on changing the ball across their back line and pushing their backs into attack.
Repeatedly, Bub Seifert passed the ball to Katie Ramos who sent it to Shelly Pund. All the while, they were looking for a seam in the PA defense. When Mo Campeau, sweeper, wasn’t directly involved in the play, she kept tabs on the opposition, directed her partners and ensured that they were never surprised.
Just to cement the point of back-line ball control, Shelly Pund, right back for the Flash, opened the scoring. Fifteen minutes into the game, Shelly sent a ball up the wing and followed. Cayla Derry received it and released to Brittany Barnes. Then Barnes dropped it back to Shelly who put the ball on a rope to the upper right corner, giving the goalie no chance.
Ten minutes later, Kendra Sato sent a hard cross to Barnes who stormed past PA’s defense and slapped it into the goal for number 2.
In the second half, both teams were showing the effects of the heat. Pace of play slowed. Mid-way through, Nicole Hovey exploited a weak clearance and finished the scoring.
This coming weekend, the Flash play in the Santa Cruz Classic. Game times are 9 and 12:20 on Saturday and 8 and 2:00 on Sunday.
