CHS squares off against second Morgan Hill team in as many weeks
tonight
Last week against Sobrato, the Christopher High defense had the responsibility of slowing one of the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s most talented running backs in senior Obi Mbonu.
The Cougars were up to the task, holding Mbonu to just 69 yards in a 40-26 defeat to the Bulldogs.
Tonight against Live Oak, CHS will again have to deal with a skilled ball carrier – Acorns sophomore Trevor Bearden, who lit up Gilroy High’s defense for 320 total yards of offense and five touchdowns.
“He’s a different back,” CHS head coach Tim Pierleoni said. “He likes to get outside and he’s fast.”
But it’s what the Cougars weren’t able to do against the Bulldogs that had Pierleoni preaching disciplined football throughout the week of practice.
“We weren’t able to stop (Sobrato) on third down,” said Pierleoni, whose team allowed six first downs, following a third down play. “And when we did stop them, we had some penalties that hurt us. When you’re a team with seniors now, you can’t make those types of mistakes.”
The Cougars (0-1) and Acorns (0-1) met last year in Gilroy, and in that affair, CHS trailed just 7-3 at the half before a pair of second-half Acorns touchdowns put the game out of reach.
Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Live Oak’s Richert Field.
— The Cougars had five player record double-digit tackle numbers against the Bulldogs: Patrick Mank (17), Bryant Cid (15), Dillon Babb (11), Mikey Pirnik (10) and Travis Franco (10.)
