Player of the Game

Jay Raven

The senior cornerback had two interceptions, one of which made a bad night for Woodside worse. With under a minute to play and the Wildcats at the 1-yard line poised to score a game-ending (and pride-saving) touchdown, Raven picked off quarterback Matt Pelesasa’s pass intended for Jim Moors, then scampered 99 yards for Gilroy’s final TD.

TCAL roundup

Salinas 38, watsonville 6

Salinas QB Skyler Crawford runs 57 yards for TD in second quarter, throws 35-yard TD pass to Mark Laughton; Cowboys lead 24-0 at halftime

LIVE OAK 35, AlVAREZ 18

Dustin Muhn, Kevin Abbott rush for 90 yards apiece as the Acorns two-headed running attack continues to build up steam in the preseason; Muhn also runs a nifty fake punt for a first down.

SAN BENITO 28, SAN LORENZO VALLEY 21

Cougars score two TDs in three minutes to open game, but Haybalers dominate the rest of the way, as Dru Blake boots three FGs in fourth, including a 42-yarder; Jeff Weltz scores two TDs for Hollister.

HIT of the Game

In the second quarter, 5-foot-6 Gilroy linebacker Vince Giacalone put every inch of muscle into a solo tackle of a much taller Woodside receiver, Josh Strause, at midfield after a reception. The play kept the Wildcats short of a first down and brought up fourth down.

Quote of the Game

‘The (new) field is very nice. However, when you fall, your arms get scraped up. The best is when you get turf all over your face.’
