With a chance to finish the first half of Tri-County Athletic League play tied for first place, Gilroy instead slipped into a three-way tie for second Tuesday when host Alisal used a six-run third inning as the catalyst for a 7-2 win.
The Trojans (7-11, 2-4) had just four hits but they were opportunistic when it counted on a windswept day, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter in the third inning.
“And they all scored,” GHS coach Clint Wheeler said of the Alisal players who drew free passes. “It’s the first time in 22 years that I have been associated with the program here that we lost to Alisal.”
Gilroy (17-10, 4-2) scored first in the third inning when Roberto Celestino tripled and scored on Michael Stevens’ base hit.
That was half of the Mustangs’ hits in the game. When they scored their second run in the seventh, they did so without a base hit. Orlando Felix was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored when Matt Hemeon hit into a fielder’s choice.
“We just handed it to them,” Wheeler said. “They were hitting and running and put the ball into play. They just took it to us.”
Gilroy committed four errors but they weren’t as costly as the walks and lack of timely hitting.
“Our approach at the plate was not what weather conditions called for,” Wheeler said. “Our errors would not have been so costly if we hadn’t hurt ourselves with walks. This was a huge loss since Palma beat Salinas and we’re now in a three-way tie for second when we could have been tied for first (with San Benito).”
Gilroy begins its second half of TCAL action at 4pm Thursday when it hosts Alvarez.
