• Houseplants need less water in the winter because of shorter days, overcast skies and the fact that many are dormant at this time.

• Lift and divide phlox and primroses this week.

• Now’s the time to remove any old rose bushes that have worn out their welcome to make way for new varieties this winter.

• Delphiniums and columbine can be planted now so they can establish their root system during fall and winter before they come into bloom.

• Create instant indoor Christmas decorations using poinsettia plants with their bright red, pink, yellow, white and bi-colors. You can also fill baskets and other indoor containers with beautiful cyclamen. They are available in pink, white, red, rose, salmon and bi-colors.

• Slugs and snails love the damp winter conditions; it’s an appropriate time to start dealing with these critters. For natural control, install the copper bands available at garden centers. Snails won’t cross the copper because it gives off an electrical current to deter them.

• Plant bulbs in a decorative container this week to give as a gift at Christmas time.

• Replenish your outdoor container garden with winter annuals to keep the color show going right up until spring.
