Gilroy – The Garlic Festival music line up has always been a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. This year it’s also going to be a little bit country.
Two new bands, James Sanchez & the Wanted, and Big Rain, which bills itself as a country/funk band, will bring a little twang to the Vineyard Stage.
“We’ve gotten some requests for country and it was one of the areas we wanted to see new bands in,” said Ryan Romero, the festivals assistant entertainment chairman.
The other new addition are the rockers of Finding Stella, which returns to the festival after a one-year absence.
“They weren’t able to play to last year because they were gaining in popularity and playing larger gigs,” Romero said, “but we were able to sneak them back in this year on Saturday. They’re a band that got a really great response.”
Otherwise, the entertainment at the festival’s four stages will have a familiar ring, anchored by, who else, Shaboom, on Saturday and Sunday. Year after year, the band’s sweet rock sounds of the ’50s and ’60s bring garlic partiers to their feet, no matter the heat.
“They’ve got a huge following because of the number of years they’ve been together,” Romero said. “People know the band and love to come out and watch them. The music they do appeals to the baby boomers but it also is a draw for the younger crowd. It’s very danceable. It’s just fun party music.”
The 27th Garlic Festival also has a number of choices if the wandering minstrel is more your style. Joining old favorites, Barry Kaufman and his mandolin, a barbershop quartet, and a brass band will be strolling Mariachis, delivering a true southern flavor to the celebration of the stinkin’ bulb.
