Gilroy – The 29th Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen will be crowned today at 6pm in the Gavilan College Theatre. This year’s competition will feature six contestants ranging in age from high school to recent college graduates.

Before the competition, the young women will be judged on their presence in an interview. On stage they will be judged on their delivery of a speech, their poise in an evening gown and answering a surprise question, and a performance of their special talent.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at the door.

Chamber Singers Say Goodbye at Concert

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers will host a Sayonara Concert Monday to bid farewell before embarking on a 12-day trip to Japan. The upcoming show will preview the program they will perform to audiences around the foreign country. As thanks for the support for the people who have supported the choir during all its preparation and fundraising, the show will be free and open to the public.

During its trip, the choir will see Tokyo, Hiroshima and visit Gilroy’s sister city, Takko-machi. They will also stay in Asakura, which has an exchange program with Gilroy and recently sent a group of 18 visitors over to tour the area.

Police Warn Residents of Scam

Gilroy – A mail scam is making the rounds in South County. Gilroy resident Juan Birrueta received a letter and a $4,950 check from the North American Sweepstakes Alliance in Toronto, Friday afternoon.

The letter instructed him to pay $2,950 to an agent “for tax charges.” Birrueta reported the scam to police, and notified the Dispatch to warn others.

“If they sent it to me, they probably sent it to other people in Gilroy,” Birrueta said.

Youth Leadership Conference

Gilroy – The Second Annual Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference will take place at Gavilan College from 11am to 7pm Saturday, in the Student Center and Social Science buildings.

Workshops on indigenous culture, leadership, nonviolence, sexual health education, domestic violence, and gang/alcohol prevention will be given, and keynote speaker Cesar Cruz will also be present.

Admission is free and lunch and dinner will be provided.

MACSA Seeks Most Influential Latinos

Gilroy – The Mexican American Community Services Agency is seeking nominations for the 100 Most Influential Latinos in Silicon Valley. The winners will be announced at a red-carpet event June 30 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, and featured in San Jose Magazine. The top winners in 10 categories – arts and culture, community and philanthropy, business, education, government, health and wellness, law and public safety, media, technology and science, and legends (those who have retired or passed on) – will be highlighted at the event.

Nominations are due by April 6, and can be submitted online at www.macsa.org or www.redcarpetgala.com.
