The Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy’s Academic Decathlon team is off to compete in the California Academic Decathlon State Finals March 14 through 17 at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento.

The nine-member team composed of Jessica Cabatingin, Fernando Lopez, Richard Carrini, Tara Clark, Logan Tobey, Evan Hickerson, Jeremy Lohman, Alyssa Aragon, Shelby Wallace and coach James Corcoran will represent the school. The team took first place overall in Santa Clara County, securing a spot at the State Championship

“We now will go against the best schools from 38 counties throughout California with the goal to qualify and compete in the United States Academic Decathlon in Wisconsin in late April,” said GECA Principal, Mary Ann Boylan.

Each team member participates in 10 events in the Academic Decathlon, including art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, science and social science. In addition, the contestants perform prepared and impromptu speeches, write essays on a given topic and are interviewed by a panel of judges. The final event is the “Super Quiz Relay” and will be held at Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium.

GECA students are staff are presently fundraising/looking for donations to assist in this venture. If you would like to make a donation, make a check out to GECA PTSA. The PTSA is nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and is tax deductible. GECA is a small high school located on the campus of Gavilan College at 5055 Santa Teresa Boulevard.
