two wins to push its record to 15-3.
Gilroy – The Gilroy boys basketball team had another solid week, gaining two wins to push its record to 15-3.
First, North Monterey County came to Gilroy for a non-league game. The Mustangs had no trouble defeating the Condors 51-30. Leading the Mustangs were Kendrick Azcueta with 14 points, Justin Wheat with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Stephen Galtman with 11 boards.
Gilroy was also successful Wednesday against San Benito with a 56-35 win. Azcueta dropped in another 14 points, Galtman stayed strong with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Jamie Jensen stepped up with an all-around effort with eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
“We’re ready,” said head JV coach Jay Baksa, “We’ve won 15 out of 18 games. We’re ready for TCAL competition.”
The freshman squad was also successful with a 45-30 win against North Monterey County, and a 37-35 win over the Haybalers, increasing its overall record to 13-6 for the season.
“Our kids play really hard and they never give up,” said GHS freshman head coach Ed Pollock.
On Tuesday, the girls junior varsity beat the ‘Balers at San Benito, scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter en route to a 42-34 win.
The JV girls suffered the first league defeat Thursday when they fell to North Salinas 43-33. Breanna Mah had 12 points to pace the Mustangs (8-3 overall, 2-1 in TCAL).
The girls freshman team conquered the ‘Balers with a 30-17 win, and then dispatched the Vikings 34-19 to run their overall record to 9-1. Angel Senior paced the Mustangs (8-1) with seven points and seven boards, and Lindsey Foster had six rebounds against San Benito. Laura Steele and Senior had seven points each against North Salinas.
In a nonleague game Saturday, the boys soccer team tied at Los Gatos, 1-1. Captain John Paul Sanchez scored for the Mustangs, who are now 4-5-2 overall.
In Watsonville, the girls soccer squad was busy in their nonleague battle with the Wildcatz. Freshman Kasandra Kachakji’s goal lifted Gilroy to a 1-0 win. Kachakji had a big game with two goals Thursday as the unbeaten Mustangs defeated Notre Dame 5-0. Gilroy is 4-0 for the season.
“I think we’re going to do well this year,” said coach Luis Figueroa. “Our goal is to win all of our league games.”
The wrestling team also brought up the heat on Wednesday night, winning more matches than North Salinas. Gilroy won a total of four weight groups (112, 119, 125, 135) while the Vikings only took one (160.)
“I didn’t have a full lineup, and he didn’t have a full lineup, so we just wrestled with who we had,” said coach Marty Serrano.
