GILROY – The Gilroy High School Choirs will be joining with Randy Sparks and The New Christy Minstrels for “Pops Concert” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 3, in the Gavilan College Theater.
Sparks was Burl Ives writer and opening act for 30 years. Years ago, Sparks’ sister, who used to be the practice pianist for the Gilroy High School Choirs, asked Sparks and his band to play with the choirs and raise money for their Europe trip. Instead, Sparks suggested that he and Ives use the choirs to complete their newly written and recorded album ”Crazy Eggs.” Ives was too infirm at the time to do a live show, but the choirs were recorded behind his voice.
”Crazy Eggs” was the last music record Burl Ives completed before he died. The choirs sold enough CDs and cassettes to make their trip that year. However, many CDs and cassettes are still available and will be sold at Thursday’s concert.
The New Christy Minstrels will perform the ‘Crazy Eggs’ program, which includes 10 songs with the five different choirs, such as ”Just Americans,” ”This Land Is Your Land” and ”Julianne.” Not all members can make it to the concert but many will. The night will include Sparks, Becky Jo Benson, Lori Brandon, Chuck Cole, Ron Wilburn, Fred Johansen and Art Morgan.
The music for the evening will close with the Grammy-winning song ”Today.” Afterward, Gilroy High School seniors will be honored and awards will be given for their hard work.
Tickets are $5 and are available at Porcella’s Music, 7357 Monterey St., or at the door before the show. Proceeds received will go toward the choirs’ programs.
