Ramirez nets game-winner in 1-0 victory over N. Salinas
SALINAS – Junior captain Elena Ramirez scored the game-winner with six minutes remaining and senior netminder Sam Sicard blocked two penalty strokes to preserve the Lady Mustang stickhandlers’ 1-0 victory over North Salinas.

Ramirez flicked a rebound shot over the goalie from seven yards out to break the scoreless tie and extend the Lady Mustangs’ winning streak to six straight.

“She took her time and put it up and over the goalie. It was fast,” said co-head coach Adam Gemar of the icebreaker.

Sicard was called for two infractions in the first and second halves – both resulting in penalty shots. But Sicard did not let anything get past her – making a pad save on the first shot and a stick save on the second one.

Midfielder Crystal Quintanar was named Gilroy’s player of the game.

The undefeated Lady Mustangs (6-0) will travel to York on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. start.

YOUNG STICKS: The JV field hockey team finished in a 2-2 tie with North Salinas. The Gilroy goals were scored by Lindsay Kwong and Kelly Perkins. The Lady Mustangs also defeated Santa Catalina last week by a 3-0 spread as Perkins, Cydney Fong, and Jennifer Robinson all scored.
