Gilroy – Just hours after Gilroy High School seniors return from Disneyland Thursday they will prepare to take the final step of their secondary education: Graduation.
The largest class of GHS seniors will take to the junior high practice field tonight, gathering one final time before embarking on their uncertain futures.
Carissa Filice, the class salutatorian, will deliver the welcoming speech and Debra Cheng, GHS’ valedictorian, is to give the farewell speech.
Cheng had her speech finished before the senior trip to Disneyland.
“I didn’t want to be writing it on the way home,” she said.
Both seniors were recognized at Senior Awards Night June 7.
Filice was awarded more than $4,000 in scholarships and named a Scholar Athlete for having the highest Grade Point Average among varsity athletes. She competed for four years on the women’s golf team.
Filice will head to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in the fall.
Cheng, who is the recipient of the Governor’s Scholar Award and a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation, will attend University of California, Berkeley to study the biological sciences.
While rumors of rain arriving just in time for graduation were abound all week, forecasters now predict mostly cloudy skies with just a 20 percent chance of rain.
The Dispatch will run a special graduation section Tuesday.
