The Gilroy 9- and 10- year-old girls All Star team beat Sunnyvale National 5-1 on Sunday.
The first inning started out shaky for Gilroy. Pitcher Alissa Castro limited Sunnyvale by striking out the side. Gilroy’s first runs came in the third inning. A base hit by Sara Lira and a two-RBI double by Adrianna Osuna allowed Gilroy to put three runs on the board. Strong defense in the fourth kept Sunnyvale at bay. Center fielder Stephanie Gomez fired the ball to catcher Castro who made the tag.
Gilroy scored its last two runs in the fifth inning as Castro hit an RBI single and then scored on Osuna’s fielders choice. Dominique Perez made a couple nice defensive plays in the game and laid down a great bunt.
Gilroy won its first game 21-0 Friday against Tennyson. Danielle Kinoshita shut down their offense with 10 strikeouts. She only faced 12 batters. Offensively, Brenna O’Neill went 3-for-4, and Osuna went 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs.
Gilroy will play their next Championship game on Tuesday at 3:30 in San Jose at Flickinger Park. If they win then they are off to Manteca. On the mound for them will be Danielle Kinoshita who will be going for her second victory; her first being a 1 hit shut-out, with 10 strike outs in 4 innings.
The Gilroy Little League 11 and 12 girls All-stars won their first game 6-5 in the District 59 Sections. Ashley Harrington, who pitched six strong innings for Gilroy led the Gilroy girls All-stars. She struck out nine batters. Defensively, Gilroy was led by shortstop Adrainna Barrientos and first baseman Emily Castro. Catcher Mariah Mastroeni also made some nice plays.
Putting the ball in play attributed to many of Gilroy’s runs. Scoring runs for Gilroy was Elizabeth Wallace, Stelle Nelson and Nanny. Nickie Ellis scored the winning run.
Gilroy played last Friday at Ortega Park in Sunnyvale against District 45 from Hayward.
Timely pitching and outstanding hitting gave Gilroy a 26-0 win over Hayward in just four innings.
Pitching for Gilroy was Sarah Sendejas. She pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight batters. Adrainna Barrientos and Emily Castro continued to play great defensive.
Everybody on the Gilroy team had hits. Lleading the way was Ellen Pierce with a home run, a triple and a double for five RBIs. Key hits came from Sarah Ruiz, Amy Fortino, Kristy Pineda, Stelle Nelson and Ellisa Torres. Mastroieni continued to be solid behind the plate, scoring five runs on four hits.
On Saturday, Gilroy played at Ortega Park in Sunnyvale against the District 44 Sunnyvale Nationals.
Sunnyvale put a damper on Gilroy’s hope to win Sections by winning 7-2.
One rough inning for Gilroy, the second, led to seven Sunnyvale runs.
Walks and errors were costly for Gilroy that inning. Pitcher Ashley Harrington battled back to shutdown Sunnyvale the rest of the game, striking out seven.
Gilroy battled back. Scoring runs for Gilroy were Kristy Pineda and Mariah Mastroieni.
Gilroy played Sunday against a District 59 opponent from San Jose.
The Gilroy All-stars took their first step towards coming back from the loser’s bracket by winning 11-3. Stelle Nelson and Nicke Ellis provided a solid defense on the right side at first and second base. Maria Mastroieni was solid at catcher, scored three key runs for Gilroy. Julie Wallace also scored runs
Pitching six solid innings with five strikeouts and only two walks was Sarah Sendejas. Nonny Barrientos closed the holes at shortstop.
Gilroy played Monday at 5 p.m. against District 44, Sunnyvale at Ortega Park in Sunnyvale. If Gilroy won the game, they will have to play Sunnyvale again tonight to advance out of Section 5 tournament.
After a tough 5-4 lost to Almaden, the Gilroy All-Stars were able to stay alive with a 8-0 win against Milpitas North.
Pitchers Michael Hartman, Kyle Stannard and Matt Jackson pitched well. Daniel Valdez started Gilroy off with a single in the third. Arron Cimino was able to load the bases for Rafeal Garcia. Garcia hit a double to score three runs. Eric Vegas knocked in Garcia with a double. Gilroy scored four runs in the fourth inning.
Stannard finished pitching in the fifth inning, and Jackson closed it off in the top of the sixth inning.
