After years of deliberations Gilroy City Council approved a long-discussed $100,000 traffic study to reduce traffic congestion on Welburn Avenue.
The study will take a year and a half, said City Traffic Engineer Don Dey, and will culminate in remediations such as rumble strips, more stop signs or other measures. Councilman Peter Arellano recommended speed bumps be placed during the traffic study. The Council then directed staff to review the options.
Residents of the highly-commuted road have been to City Council meetings several times protesting the traffic. Tim Gavin, one of the residents, said the problem dates back to the 1960s.
According to Gavin, his stretch of Welburn Avenue averages one vehicle every nine seconds.
Residents say they have had their pets run over by speeding cars and some say they have difficulty backing out of their home.
Welburn Avenue turns into Leavesley Road, a Highway 101 exit.
