Beatrice A. Sola

Beatrice A. Sola passed away at the age of 103, Wednesday evening at the Mabie Northside Skilled Nursing Facility in Hollister. She was born in New Idria in San Benito County and has lived here all her life. Member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Alice Laverne McDonald

Manuel J. Escover

Manuel J. Escover passed away after a brief illness on January 16, 2008. Mr. Escover is the son of the late Manuel F. and Lenora Escover, and brother of the deceased Marie Buckner and Gloria Escover. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Escover, and sons Matthew Escover and Steven Escover. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in the Santa Clara Valley, San Benito County, and the Central Valley.

Gene A. Scowden

Gene was born in 1934 in Oklahoma City. He graduated high school in 1951 and enlisted in the US Navy the following year, where he served for 26 years. After retiring as Sr. Chief, Gene worked in commercial plumbing and lived with his family in Gilroy.

Hanna Hassler

Hanna Hassler, 83, died July 5th at Bruns House Hospice in Alamo, California after a short illness. Her six children were at her side.

Rosario Castro

Rosario Garciduenas Castro, beloved mother, passed on July 9, 2008. She was born October 1, 1921 in Mexico to Maria Zavala and Mardonio Ortega Garciduenas. A longtime resident of Morgan Hill, she spent her early years in La Verne, CA. She will be remembered as a loving mother and doting grandmother who built her world around her sons, daughters and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Ralph R. Castro, her eldest son Ralph Castro Jr., grandson Alexander Alfaro, great-grandson Gil Delao, and five Altamirano infants. She is survived by her 8 children and their families: Raquel Altamirano of Madera, Rosa Linda Viola of Gilroy, Rich Castro of Boulder, CO, Rita Hawkins of Morgan Hill, Ralph Castro of Morgan Hill, Roberto Castro of Fresno, Ramon Castro of Milpitas, and Rudy Castro of Las Vegas, NV, 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A member of St. Catherine's Parish in Morgan Hill for more than 40 years, she was a woman of exceptionally strong faith which she used as a guiding force in her life and to shepherd her family. Her gifts of love, humor and inner strength made her the center of family life for all of her children; she will be remembered for her caring character and particularly how special she made all those who loved her feel in her presence. Visitation will begin Thursday July 17th at 2:00 P.M., followed by a Rosary at 6:30 P.M. at Johnson Funeral Home, 17720 Monterey Street. The Funeral Mass will be Friday July 18th, 10:00 A.M. at St. Catherine Catholic Church, 17400 Peak Avenue, Morgan Hill, CA. Arrangements by Johnson Funeral Home.

Olga N. Bertuccio

Olga N. Bertuccio passed away last Tuesday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital at the age of 84. Olga was born and raised in Hollister and lived here all her life. She attended local schools and graduated from San Benito High School. She was a member of Immaculate Conception and Sacred Heart parishes, and a member of the Farm Bureau. Olga was an orchardist as well as the proprietor of Bertuccio's Fruit Stand at her property on Airline Highway where she enjoyed working and assisting people. "She liked it because it kept her in touch with her friends", said her family. "She wasn't a stranger to people, because she always wanted to assist people", said her sister, Irma. She also had a great love for animals, especially her dogs and cats.

Catherine McCarthy Carli

Cathy McCarthy Carli died September 19, 2008. Cathy, the loving wife of Alessio and devoted mother of twins Alessia and Catia, was a woman of talent and a tower of strength. She was an award winning graphic designer and an advocate for children with special needs, especially those with Down Sydrome. Cathy, born in San Francisco and the daughter of Chris and Rose McCarthy (deceased), both natives of Ireland, was proud of her Irish heritage, but she was even more proud of her Italian-born husband and her Irish-Italian-American daughters. For every life Cathy touched, a soul was nurtured and made that much the better for knowing her. Her sisters, Marian (McCarthy) Shaffner and Maggie (McCarthy) Bell, will miss her dearly, as will her sister-in-law, Anna Carli, her mother-in-law, Tina Carli, and her father-in-law Elpidio Carli, all of Sienna, Italy. Her brothers-in-law, Dave Shaffner and Kurt Bell, and her nephews, Stephen Shaffner and Brendan and Kevin Bell, will never forget the joy that was our Cathy. She will be remembered by all who knew her, especially by her loving cousins in America and in Ireland, her dear friends from Presentation High School, her friends from San Francisco, Paris, Sonoma and Hollister, the artists she worked and painted with and by anyone who was able to work, play, paint, or share a glass of wine with her. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund is being set up for Alessia and Catia. Friends are invited to a memorial Mass and a celebration of Cathy's life on Friday Sept. 26th at 1:30 P.M. at the Old Mission San Juan Bautista 2nd & Mariposa Streets, San Juan Bautista. It is with great sadness that the family of Paula Terri Walter announces her passing on June 29, 2011, at the age of 72 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
