Rex Ward, a native of Arkansas moved to California in the 1950's, and to Hollister in the 70's. He worked at E.A. Thompson, San Benito Rockery, McKinnon Lumber, and Crofts Lofts. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the family home. He is also survived by his children: Marilyn Westphal of Hollister, John Westphal of Herald, Marsha Norlock of Watsonville, Rex Curtis Ward of Clovis, Susan Cornwell of Citrus Heights, and Keith Ward of Newman, and grandchildren: Rex and Jacob Ward, Phillip Treibek-Westphal, Elizabeth, Rose, and Carolyn Westphal, Aaron and Kimber Ward, Amy,Justin,PJ,and Nate Cornwell, and Tiffany and Trevor Norlock. A private memorial is planned. Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Ellen ended her long, courageous battle with ovarian cancer on October 31, 2009, surrounded by her family. Her warmth, care for others and love of life touched all who had the honor of knowing her. She was the loving matriarch of an extended family including her loving husband Mick Grundy, Daughters Stephanie Cowan, Rebecca Garcia, Amanda Jacobsen. Eden Leatherman and their husbands and 6 grandchildren.
E. Paul Schoutens passed away in Hayden, ID on August 19, 2009 following a brief illness. Paul was born in Santa Monica, CA on October 30, 1944. He moved with his family to Gilroy, CA in 1950. His father opened the Foster's Freeze in Gilroy, CA, in June of 1950. Paul took over the family business in 1972 and along with his family, ran it until November of 1999. The family moved to Idaho in 2000 and for the past 5 years, Paul owned and operated Alpha Woodworks in Hayden, ID.

Edna M. Souza passed away at her Hollister residence on October 2nd, 2009, at the age of 92 years. Edna was the daughter of the late Manuel Corcell and Marie Escobar who were early residents in San Juan Bautista. Edna received her education at San Juan Grammar School and was a graduate of San Benito High School. She and her late husband Joseph G. Souza who was a native of San Luis Obispo and who died in 1997 had operated a dairy ranch in Salinas Valley in the early l940's before coming to Hollister in 1945 to farm 50 acres of apricots on Wright Road. As a homemaker most of her adult life, Edna was well known throughout the Portuguese Community from San Luis Obispo to Reno for her talents in designing and baking wedding cakes. She loved cooking and was an excellent seamstress. "Edna wasn't afraid to work, said her nephew Tony. When she had the dairy she would actually cut hay with a team of horses." Edna was a 50 year member of the Hollister Grange and it's president for 30 years; a member of the I.D.E.S. of Salinas, and for 40 years she and her husband traveled to all 50 States with the Alaskan Camper Club. Besides her husband Joseph, she was pre-deceased by sister Millie Kashersky, brother Arthur Corcell, and nephew Bobby Ivelich. Survivors are brother-in-law Bill Kashersky, niece Mary Doughty of Salinas; great nephew Tony Ivelich (Pam) of Gilroy; great-niece Michelle Garcia (Danny) of Gilroy; great-nephew Matthew Doughty of Salinas; and great-great-nieces Jacklyn Cordero of Gilroy and Deanna Arias of Hollister. Visitation is today (Tues) from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Grunnagle Funeral Home. Friends are invited to the funeral service Wednesday morning at 10:00 A.M. at the mortuary chapel followed by the entombment at Calvary Mausoleum. Reception to follow.
Surrounded by family and friends, Rebecca passed away peacefully last Monday night at the age of 53. She lived in Gilroy all her life. She is survived by her mother, Mary Guajardo, sister Martha and brother Basil. Rebecca (Becky) will be greatly missed by all her knew her. A memorial service will be held at Full Gospel Church, 7250 Forest St., Gilroy on Tuesday, March 3rd, at 7:00 P.M.
