The City of Gilroy has hired a project manager for an ice rink facility at the Gilroy Sports Park, and is currently in discussions with an architect to design it.
In 2022, the Gilroy City Council approved a term sheet with Sharks Sports & Entertainment, and City Administrator Jimmy Forbis said June 5 that officials are working on finalizing an operating agreement.Â
The city and Sharks envision a 100,000-square-foot facility located at the Sports Park at 5925 Monterey Frontage Road that would house two National Hockey League-sized ice rinks, as well as spectator seating, training rooms, multi-purpose rooms, offices, a restaurant and pro shop.
Forbis anticipated the designs will be brought to the council soon, which will give officials a better understanding of the construction costs associated with the project. To fund the facility, the council would need to approve a municipal bond, which would then be reimbursed by the Sharks over a 30- to 35-year period with interest.
Construction work is projected to begin by the end of the year, and take 18 to 24 months to complete.
