Gilroy – Two good Samaritans watching their neighbor’s home for the holidays attempted to apprehend a robber the pair discovered inside the home Christmas Day, police said.
The thief fled on foot with a trash bag of jewelry and miscellaneous items as the couple tried to chase the suspect down.
At 4:20pm Sunday, the Samaritans went to the neighbors house on Irish Court and were surprised to find someone already inside.
The Hispanic male described as wearing a red hat and in his thirties, took off after the two entered the house.
One secured the house then chased the suspect on foot, as the other tried to follow the suspect in a vehicle.
“They lost him in the area of Kern (Avenue) and Welburn (Avenue),” said Gilroy Police Sgt. Wes Stanford.
GPD requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Police set up a perimeter and searched for 90 minutes for the suspect.
The two witnesses told police they believed there may have been a second suspect inside the house, but police could not confirm whether there actually was.
A nearby resident found the trash bag on his lawn and returned it to police.
“We think we have gotten everything back,” Stanford said. “We did get fingerprints which will hopefully lead us to the suspect.”
Police are working on several leads but declined to elaborate.
