Gilroy – City Police Chief Gregg Giusiana says he plans to mention the possibility of a city law restricting “airsoft” plastic-BB guns at the city council’s annual retreat on public safety matters in November.

Giusiana said Wednesday he is thinking of something similar to a recently passed Morgan Hill law, which bans airsoft guns in public places.

Giusiana said he discussed this law with Morgan Hill’s interim police chief, Bruce Cumming, in the time before that city’s council passed the ordinance.

Waiting until November will give the state Legislature more time to perhaps pass a similar bill, Giusiana said.

“Maybe by then the state stuff will shake out,” the chief said. The Assembly passed the bill in May.

Morgan Hill Mayor Dennis Kennedy asked Cumming to draft a replica gun law after an April incident in which police almost shot several teen-agers. They were wearing masks and camouflage and running around a Morgan Hill elementary school with realistic-looking assault rifles and handguns.
