The Gilroy Police Department has launched a new communication system that allows residents to sign up for instant text message or email alerts for breaking news regarding public safety.
Nixle is an emergency alert service that will automatically post updates to GPD’s Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as through text messages, email and mobile applications.
“It’s always been a department priority to involve the community in what we do. Especially in light of some incidents that have been occurring around us, we have identified the need to be able to instantly communicate updates to the community,” said Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.
The GPD joined Nixle at no cost, and the service is free for community members as well (standard text message rates apply). And don’t be concerned with getting your inbox flooded with messages, as updates can be tailored to specific interests.
“One of the greatest things about Nixle is you can just sign up for what you want,” Gallacinao said.
Community members interested in receiving updates can text the GPD at 888777:
- Text “GPDALERTS” for important public safety alerts, including notifications of at-risk missing juveniles and crimes that affect public safety.
- Text “GPDPR” to receive community news notifications, including community events (such as DUI checkpoints and holiday parades) and the Gilroy Most Wanted updates.
- Text “GPDMEDIA” to receive GPD media releases.
“We’re happy to be able to reach as many people as possible through this new service,” Gallacinao said.
