Well, the truth is as a golf instructor it is a motion that actually very few golfers do. Lifting your head is a very unnatural act and doesn’t happen very often during the swing.
What does happen that causes you to swing over the ball or just top it is a change in your posture from your set-up to you impact point. Your posture should be made up of three key elements. Your back should be angled, your knees should be bent and your left arm should be straight.
If you return to the ball with these three keys in the same position they were in at set-up, then you will hit the ball just fine. However, most people have a tendency to straighten up their backs or straighen up their legs and therefore become taller during the downswing. This doesn’t allow you to reach the ball any more.
To cure the tops, simply keep the back angled the same and just turn your shoulder back and through without straightening up. Keep your knees in a flexed position so the top of your kneecaps just press against the inside of your pants. Keeping these items constant will lead to straighter and higher golf shots.
Remember when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
