CALLER 1: I’m happy that the girls are getting a volleyball team
at Gavilan College but I’d like to know how you can get a grant for
the volleyball team when the approval for the program hadn’t even
been voted upon by the school board? So maybe you can find out for
me. Thanks.

GREEN PHONE: Hang on, Caller, we’ve got another inquiry about Gavilan women’s sports …
CALLER 2: I have a question. I just wanted to know why the Gavilan softball team, for the last five or so weeks, has been denied use of its fundraising money? Has the baseball team been able to use theirs? Let me know. Thanks.
GREEN PHONE: Callers, there has been a lot of talk recently about Gavilan’s handling of women’s sports. As with most things, there are two sides to every story. Fortunately, the Office of Civil rights has already begun its investigation of Gavilan College’s Title IX compliance regarding the softball program. While this investigation is going to take weeks, perhaps months, the Green Phone is confident all will be revealed about this controversy, and more importantly, that justice will be served when the investigation is complete. In the meantime, we’ll continue to look into the issues and allegations you bring up in your calls. Sadly, what’s being overlooked amidst the current controversy is that the softball team just completed one of its most successful seasons in school history with 20 wins, four team members earned All–Conference honors and head coach Tim Kenworthy was named Coast Conference Southern Division Coach of the Year.
CALLER 3: I’m calling about the high school baseball coverage. Not very good coverage. I think it would help if the reporter would go to the game and maybe go to the game on time when he does go. That’s all I have to say. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the call. We try to do our best to cover every sport and balance our coverage of all sports, Caller 3. In a perfect world, the Dispatch would have a reporter for every sport, but that’s just not possible. That being said, we know the GHS baseball team – and all of the other spring high school sports – are coming up on some big games and meets as the spring seasons head towards playoff time. You can be sure we’ll be there for the action. We’ll also be doing our darndest to cover the many non-high school sports and activities going on concurrently.
CALLER 4: Just wanted to talk about the St. Mary golf tournament. I just wanted to let you guys know I worked it and I work at Eagle Ridge and it was a lot of fun. Everybody was really nice and I had a great time setting it up. Thank you very much.
GREEN PHONE: You can say that again, Caller 4. We almost couldn’t get Ana off the course and into the office that day. Good weather, good people and overall great event for a worthy cause.
CALLER 5: Thanks, Green Phone, for the box scores.
GREEN PHONE: You’re welcome.
