Coach Nicky Anagnoston predicted that she needed to get the most out of the five members of Christopher High’s gymnastics team if it were to meet the point total necessary to qualify for the Central Coast Section finals next week.
“We have high goals,” Anagnoston said in between hosting responsibilities undertaken for the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals at Gilroy High on Wednesday.
The Cougars placed fourth out of seven teams, but more importantly eclipsed the 128-point mark with a 132.7 to punch their ticket to sectionals.
“They all delivered. It was great,” said Anagnoston, who doubles as the Gilroy High head coach. “They really pulled together as a team, competing in all the events. It’s an example of their dedication to the team and drive to be competitive.”
The Cougars, who have three original members from the 2010 inaugural squad – Phoebe Vavoulis, Maria Sanchez and Marissa Gomez – and two freshmen – Samantha Laird and Tiffany Roberts – each participated in the four designated events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Laird finished seventh individually in the all-around, placing in the top-10 in three events, including third on floor with a 9.3 score.
For Gilroy High, Megan Nebesnick qualified for CCS in three events – bars, beam and floor – and Olivia Trevino made the cut on vault.
“Megan nailed her bar routine,” Anagnoston said. “We were short-handed with Gilroy, but the girls who did compete had a good meet.”
The other teams in action Wednesday were St. Francis-Mountain View, Los Altos, Fremont, Cupertino and Mountain View. The CCS meet is May 17.
