Dear Editor:

I am a current employee at Wal-Mart, Gilroy. I write this letter to support the coming of the Wal-Mart Supercenter.

As a resident in Gilroy, I deeply wish to have a community that is safe, clean, and resourceful; all local merchants to be responsible and contributive. Having worked at Wal-Mart for two years, I believe the coming supercenter will benefit our community tremendously.

Wal-Mart is known for guaranteeing low prices. The supercenter, carrying fresh produce and groceries, will help a lot more residents in Gilroy and surrounding cities. This in turn will benefit our city economically.

Wal-Mart provides many stable jobs. The supercenter will provide even more. This will help reducing our local unemployment rate. Being a Wal-Mart associate, I love my company because it treats people fairly and honestly. I choose to work at Wal-Mart because the job is stable and provides good benefits (medical, dental, retirement, profit sharing and stock advantages).

At Wal-Mart, full-time associates are guaranteed to have 40 hours per week. Yet we qualify to receive full-time benefits at 32 hours per week, if we choose to. Our starting rate for the most entry positions is a lot higher than the California minimum wage. We are guaranteed a raise in pay at least once a year. Wal-Mart promotes people not according to backgrounds or status, but people’s ability and honest hard work. This is the success story for Wal-Mart associates, and Wal-Mart itself, as a company.

Wal-Mart has a strong safety compliance team. The recent Environmental Impact Report revealed no serious impact for the supercenter project. Wal-Mart is an American, native-grown success story. I sincerely encourage the residents in this community to support the approval of Wal-Mart SuperCenter.
