Dear Editor:
It warmed my heart to its icy core to read Eilien C. Barrit’s letter defending Connie Rogers as an upstanding citizen and all around wonderful person of high breeding and education.
My letter was not about Mrs. Rogers, but about the year-plus battle to bring a new Wal-Mart Super Center to Gilroy. No one can deny the footprint left on Gilroy by the former councilwoman.
Whether or not you appreciate that footprint depends entirely on which side of the aisle you sat. I would hardly consider anything I said about Mrs. Rogers vicious. Just because I disagree with virtually everything Connie Rogers stands for, and I say so publicly, does not make me mean. I find it rather ironic that those who often call the “right” intolerant and mean-spirited are often the most intolerant of all. Who was it that made the personal attack about my “insecurities and intelligence?”
Fortunately, Ms. Barrit, I have very thick skin and your comments only elicited a tickle. The people Mrs. Rogers knowingly and willingly aligned with on the anti-Wal-Mart crusade were very hostile and rude towards myself, as well as to all those who opposed them. They used verbal, written and physical intimidation and lies.
Connie Rogers is perfectly capable of defending herself. Behind that grandmotherly, gentle exterior is a tenacious and skilled foe. If Connie can’t take the heat, (and I believe she can), I think she should stay out of the way as I and the rest of the poor, huddled masses, beat a path to the new Wal-Mart Super Center.
