Temperatures soared to 101 degrees in Gilroy on Thursday, nearly breaking the record of 102 degrees set in 1988, according to forecasters.

“It’s hot in Gilroy!” said Steve Anderson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “That’s the forecast.”

A high pressure system blanketed the Santa Clara Valley midweek, blocking out the sea breezes that typically cool Gilroy and surrounding communities, Anderson said. Temperatures are expected to return to typical levels in the 90s over the weekend, he said.

Despite the steamy temperatures, no heat advisory was issued. Typically, advisories are only issued when a combination of record-breaking temperatures and widespread or prolonged heat occurs. While Hollister experienced highs identical to Gilroy’s, Morgan Hill’s temperatures topped out at 95 degrees, Anderson reported.
