Dear Editor,

A number of years ago I was wondering why Tenth Street west went straight through Gilroy, past the high school, and then curved to the south onto Uvas Park Drive and then stopped at Wren Avenue.

So I asked my brother Walter Hanna who had worked for Hanna Engineering Co. during that time. He said that he was looking along the creek for a site for a bridge to connect Tenth Street to Thomas Road (Luchessa) and also Uvas Parkway.

His plan at the time was to continue Uvas Parkway along the creek to Burchell Road to the bridge. If Uvas Parkway had been completed this way Highway 152 would have been improved, the trees would have been saved, and the Filice’s wouldn’t be talking bridge.

Walking into the Black Bear Restaurant and find my brother Walt’s picture and a story about him published in 1943 on the front page of their menu brought up the thought to me. This was taken from the Gilroy Advocate circa 1943. Memorabilia … isn’t it fun?!
