Henry W. von Frieling of Merced passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, in Gilroy. Henry, the husband of Jutta Karola von Frieling for 43 years, was father to Christopher John von Frieling of Stanardsville Va., Dorothea Maria (von Frieling) Funkhouser of Gilroy and Katherina Anne (von Frieling) Scalise of Concord. Mr. von Frieling is also survived by four grandchildren John Funkhouser, Roman Scalise, Kathryn Funkhouser and Kayla Scalise; and a sister, Dorothea Russ of Palm City, Fla.

Mr. von Frieling was born in New York City, N.Y. on June 1, 1922, where he lived for 21 years. Henry was profoundly proud of his membership in the All American Wheelman cycling club, where he shared responsibility for winning the cycling championship in 1941. While living on the East Coast, he worked for Bulova Watch Company in New York, N.Y. until entering the Navy in 1943. He trained at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Sampson, N.Y. After completing his tour in World War II, Henry was honorably discharged in 1946. He then moved to California where he attended Stanford University in Palo Alto. After college, Henry went to work as an electronics engineer for a variety of electronic companies in the Bay Area, including Ford-Philco and Lockheed and was especially proud of his involvement in the development of the mass-produced, consumer television. Henry met Jutta Scholz in San Francisco and they were married on Nov. 15, 1959. The von Frielings lived in Kings Mountain, San Carlos and San Jose prior to relocating to Merced where Henry worked as a civil servant at Castle Air Force Base. Mr. and Mrs. von Frieling eventually returned to the Bay Area in 2001 to be nearer to their two daughters due to continuing health problems. Mrs. von Frieling continues to live in Gilroy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church at 1455 East Yosemite Ave. in Merced. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. von Frieling’s name to the Transitions Rehabilitation Services in Gilroy, 842-6868.
