The South Valley’s Kelsey Jeffries is set to battle Mexico’s Jackie “The Aztec Princess” Nava for the World Boxing Council Female Superbantamweight title Dec. 3 in Cancun, Mexico, her manager announced Wednesday.
The Hollister-based 29-year-old heads to training camp in Vero Beach, Fla. this Saturday to prepare for the fight with veteran trainer Buddy McGirt. Jeffries (33-8-0, 2 KOs) fought three times over the summer, winning unanimous points decisions over Lakeysha Williams, Kim Colbert and, most recently at San Jose’s HP Pavilion on July 21, Leona Brown.
The fight at the 4,500-capacity Cancun Center in the Mexican resort town is being billed as “La Noche de Campiones.” It will be televised by Television Abierta in Mexico.
WBC champion Nava (10-1-1, 7 KOs) “has a good right hand,” Jeffries’ manager Bruce Anderson said. “It’s going to be a tough fight and it’s going to be tough to win down there. (Kelsey) will go down there and give them a run for their money.”
The former kickboxer also faced Brown in her last fight, with Nava dispatching the Pawling, N.Y.-based Brown by unanimous decision in a 10-round bout for the vacant, inaugural WBC title on May 30 in Tijuana.
The scheduled 10-round fight in Cancun will be officiated by judges from Japan, North Korea and South Korea, Anderson said. The referee will likely be Mexican.
Meanwhile, Jeffries was recently named through www.boxrec.com’s computer rankings as the third-best female boxer of all time in any weight division. Ahead of the featherweight on the list were superfeatherweight Chevelle Hallback (24-4-1, 11 KOs) at No. 1, and welterweight Mary Joe Sanders (17-0, 5 KOs) at No. 2.
