A motorcyclist was severely injured when a cut the rider off while turning left from a right turn only lane in north Gilroy.

About 5:45 p.m. Friday, a motorcyclist – whose name, age and gender were withheld – was headed westbound on the 700 block of First Street, which stretches from Miller Avenue to Wren Avenue, police said. A car that was in a right turn only lane then pulled out in front of the motorcyclist. Police did not say whether the motorcyclist hit the car or the car hit the motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist, whose injuries police only described as life threatening, was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital. Police did not say whether the motorcyclist was still in the hospital or if the rider’s condition had changed.

The driver of the car – whose name was not given – was not injured and was released at the scene, police said. Police did not say whether the driver was cited or if there were plans for an arrest.

Neither of the motorists were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, police said.
