Santa Teresa Boulevard turned out beautifully, and downtown
Gilroy, hopefully, will do likewise
When an airplane lands safely, it’s not news. When it doesn’t, well …
To a large degree, that’s human nature. And that nature is reflected in the pages of the newspaper. But it is hardly the singular reflection. Often times there are wonderful and heroic stories that are shared via the ink on these pages, though it seems those are not the stories recalled as often by the masses. Alas, human nature …
Which brings us to Gilroy’s downtown. It is an area in the midst of fundamental change and controversy. Monterey Street is ripped up, dusty, desolate and seemingly devoid of hope. Business owners are tired. Customers are wary. Delays have been multiple.
Let us offer a ray of hope: Santa Teresa Boulevard.
Remember the delays? The angst? The problems with the city and the contractor? The orange cones seemingly bolted to the cement as the days trudged by? The controversy over the “1 billion” trees?
Now, as the fall approaches, and motorists get a chance to drive the new corridor, the plain truth is that it’s a shining example of a job well done. We’d prefer sound walls that are earthen berms or cast from faux boulder forms, but given the constraints, the area is a testament to thoughtful, well- executed planning.
Santa Teresa Boulevard is a lovely entrance to our city. There are climbing vines along the sound walls and trees and bushes of various colors, shapes, sizes and varieties.
It’s a subtle feast for the eyes driving along, and if you take a moment to enjoy it, even a bit relaxing despite the steady stream of automobiles whizzing by in all directions.
Though there were bumps in the road, and it took seemingly forever, the end product is pleasing. The City of Gilroy should be proud, as should the contracting firm and the landscaping planners. Foliage imbedded in a good design can make all the difference.
If downtown turns out the same or better, all the dusty turmoil will fade away as our community enjoys a revitalized core area with cafes alongside thriving businesses surrounded by ample parking and beautiful flora and fauna.
