Hearing continued for two charged with assault

Morgan Hill – Two Morgan Hill residents will have to wait until the beginning of the year before they learn if the case against them – for allegedly beating a pregnant woman and using racial epithets against her – will go to trial.

Charles Peralta, 29, and Nicole Agriesti, 21, free on $100,000 bail each, are awaiting a preliminary hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence for a trial.

Thursday’s preliminary hearing was continued to Jan. 12 after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hood told Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Susan Bernardini one of the Morgan Hill police officers needed to testify could not be in court Thursday.

Peralta and Agriesti are charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury after an incident outside the apartment of the victim, Xochitl Calderon, 32, who was two months pregnant when the alleged assault took place and was hospitalized afterwards as doctors feared she would lose her child.

GHS stages first male beauty pageant to support paper

Gilroy – They’ll strut their stuff, down the catwalk, yeah down the catwalk. Local teens will don tuxes and PJs and even bust a move at the Gilroy High School Free Press’ first male beauty pageant Saturday at 7:30pm in the GHS theater. The bikini and high heels combination probably won’t be featured at this event, but contestants will show off a special talent, just like those gifted Miss America contestants. To ensure the contest isn’t too feminine, the boys will compete in a push-up contest. Hey, maybe someone will even through in a speech about world peace. The most talented and best looking guy will be crowned Mr. Gilroy High. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. All proceeds support the Free Press, GHS’ own award-winning newspaper. The Free Press needs community support on this fundraiser so the monthly publication can continue to be printed.

Second chance for those with outstanding warrants

Gilroy – For the month of December, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is implementing a program called Operation: A Second Chance.

Individuals with non-violent misdemeanor criminal and traffic warrants can receive a citation with a new court date in lieu of being booked into county jail.

Those qualifying for the program can come to the Sheriff’s Office Records Division at 55 W. Younger Ave. in San Jose to receive their citation.

Warrants stamped “No cite and release,” “No Walk-Over,” and “Post and Forfeit” qualify for Operation: A Second Chance. Individuals with felony warrants and any warrant involving violence do not.

Details: 808-4709.
