Gavilan presents ‘Blood Wedding’
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Theatre Arts’ department will perform “Blood Wedding” on March 31 and April 1, 6, 7 and 8. All performances begin at 8pm and will take place in the college theater at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
The play, written by Frederico Garcia Lorca, is set in Madrid, Spain circa 1933 and based on a true story of love, lust and betrayal. Lorca wrote “Blood Wedding” years after reading a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day to escape with her childhood sweetheart.
In the play, Lorca evokes the spectacle of human passion through sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic technique, elevating the love story to a tragedy of fate. Gavilan College’s rendition of “Blood Wedding” is directed by David Chavez and produced by Marilyn Abad Cardinalli with music by Tim and Frances Tompkins. The production designer is Joe Cardinalli.
General admission is $12, $8 for children and seniors and $10 for students.
Tickets: 846-4973. Details: Marilyn Abad Cardinalli at 848-4764.

Registrar says report unfounded
San Jose – The major findings and recommendations of a civil grand jury report on county voting procedures are unfounded and impractical, Santa Clara County Registrar Jesse Durazo said.
The report urges Durazo and county supervisors to lobby state and federal legislators for new laws making it harder for non-citizens to vote and to play a larger role in special tax assessment elections. But Durazo said there was no evidence that non-citizen voting is a problem in the county and that the special elections, known as Proposition 218 elections, should not be in the registrar’s purview.
The grand jury report recommends that the registrar’s office either manage the elections or act as a “center of competency” to help ensure the elections are properly executed. Durazo said his office should not be involved with Prop. 218 elections because they don’t adhere to the principle of one vote for each citizen.
