Industrial safety class available at Gavilan
Anyone who is seeking a career in the construction trades. Students should have English reading and writing proficiency can register for IT 115, Industrial Safety at Gavilan College. This-three unit course provides an introduction to the construction industry. It will cover the basic skill set required to earn and entry-level position in various trades in construction. Students will learn basic math, vocabulary, blue print reading and safety skills, along with the “soft skills” required to gain employment. The course has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit. It is transferrable to the California State University.
Spring semester classes start Jan. 30. The class meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:05 p.m. at Gavilan College Gilroy campus, room SS 205.

Get ready to revel New Year’s Eve
Tickets are now available for the a worthwhile and awesome New Year’s Eve Gala. Gilroy Relay for Life 2008 is putting on a New Year’s Eve Party to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life to be held at Christmas Hill Park June 7 and 8, 2008.
The event promises to be the premier party with something for every New Year’s reveler, including the added benefit of supporting the year long programs to promote cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle and support resources available to cancer survivors and their families through the American Cancer Society. This is a formal cocktail attire event, so dress up and step out for a good cause at the Old City Hall, corner of Sixth and Monterey streets.
Party packages for the full evening including dinner are $75 each. After 10 p.m., including gourmet desserts, dancing and champagne tickets are $50 each.

Holiday lights continue at Gilroy Gardens
Visit Gilroy Gardens Holiday Lights display daily through Sunday, from 4 to 9 p.m. The park is lit with millions of lights and certain areas of the park have been enhanced with special light displays.

Republicans meet
Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly at 7p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Mimi’s Cafe off 10th Street in Gilroy.
The objective of the local chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and country.
Coyote Creek bird walk
A series of bird walks led by Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center volunteer, continues Jan. 5, 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m. along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. The programs are free, space is limited and reservations are required.

Dinner benefits charities
The Italian Catholic Federation branch No. 28 presents the eighth annual Polenta Dinner prepared by chef Mario Fiorio and crew Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary Church, Cullen Hall, 11 First St., Gilroy.
All proceeds benefit ICF charities. Take out available after 5:30 p.m. (bring containers). Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Donation is $12 adults and $5 children younger than 12.
